Spillway Radial and Cofferdam Covers

Spillway Radial and Cofferdam Covers

Spillway radial and cofferdam covers are structures designed to manage excess water when the maximum load capacity of dam and HPP (Hydroelectric Power Plant) reservoirs is reached. They help minimize flood risks around the plant and ensure controlled discharge of excess water into the downstream riverbed.

At SETA ÇELİK, we offer comprehensive solutions for spillway radial and cofferdam covers, including detailed project preparation, material supply, manufacturing, transportation, installation, and the fitting and adjustment of embedded components. We also provide all necessary accessories, including lifting beams, to ensure a complete turnkey service from installation to commissioning.

Usage of Spillway Radial and Cofferdam Covers

Spillway radial and cofferdam covers are designed to work in synchronized harmony. Cofferdam covers are used to close radial gate openings for maintenance and repair. All cofferdam segments are interchangeable, ensuring consistency from every angle. Cofferdam covers will be lowered and raised using a mobile crane under balanced pressure conditions, achieved with minimal gate opening. For multi-part covers, this is managed by slightly opening the top part.

Cover segments will be aligned using pins. The lifting beam will have double hooks to ensure balanced lifting and lowering. Cofferdam covers will be held suspended as much as possible above the normal reservoir water level in radial gate slots.

At SETA ÇELİK, operator training provided after the field installation of spillway radial and cofferdam covers emphasizes careful use, and practical training on the operating conditions of the covers is conducted.

Design of Spillway Radial and Cofferdam Covers

The covers will be designed according to the DIN 19705 “Hydraulic Steel Structures; Design, Construction, and Installation Proposals” standard (or an equivalent standard). The project calculation of the covers will comply with DIN 19704 “Hydraulic Steel Structures” standard.

In the design of the cover, the project load will consider the cover’s own weight, hydrostatic load, debris load, wave forces, buoyancy, operational effects, wind load, hydrodynamic load, and seismic effects. Stress analysis will be performed based on critical load conditions for each structural element and connection, according to the significant stress values specified in the DIN 19704 standard.

SETA ÇELİK provides complete design and project solutions for spillway radial and cofferdam covers, offering turnkey services from design to installation, ensuring time, quality, and cost-effective solutions for our valued customers.

Manufacturing and Inspection Stages of Spillway Radial and Cofferdam Covers

After the manufacturing of spillway radial and cofferdam covers is completed, they will be fully pre-assembled in a horizontal position in our workshop. As with every project, SETA ÇELİK prepares complete workshop details, manufacturing plans, material lists, and testing procedures for the spillway radial and cofferdam covers; these documents show all dimensions and assembly details.

Compatibility of embedded components will be checked. The sealing surfaces of cover segments will be inspected.

For welds done in the workshop, ultrasonic and/or magnetic particle tests will be applied to at least 30% of the total weld length, or radiographic inspection will be performed in accordance with customer instructions and specifications.

Field welds for spillway radial and cofferdam covers will undergo radiographic or ultrasonic testing in accordance with ASME Code requirements.
