Is Your Penstock Waste Storage System Working Correctly?
It's crucial to regularly test your penstock waste storage processes and systems, and here are two common mistakes you should look for.
We often get calls to service anti-pollution valves. One of the main problems we have to deal with is penstock valves that are either set up not to close, or sites find that when they close a relief valve, they don't stop the flow completely.
We asked our experienced engineers to provide annual service for the pollution prevention penstock pipeline placed in the balancing pool at the final outlet. The valve appeared to have worked open/close, but during the confined space inspection the valve stops were set at the wrong point. We could not see any evidence of adjustment and could only conclude that the valve would never fully close.
We adjusted to allow the valve to close completely. This resulted in the valve close to closing for our customer, but without the limitation that the original valve had originally been incorrectly specified. This should serve as a warning to all sites that rely on a pollution prevention valve to ensure that if a leak event occurs, the system they have installed will actually contain a release of pollution.

Equipment overflow often occurs during a power outage, connecting containment mains valves to the site network without the need for emergency backup is avoided as a shut-off system without electricity is clearly ineffective.
